As you may, or may not know, there is a lot of scientific knowledge behind the Make-up/Skin Care products industry. And for this blog, I’d like to talk about one of my favorite skin care products, hyaluronic acid. (HA)

In 1943, German scientist Karl Meyer found  the substance contained two sugar molecules, uronic, from a cow’s eye Hyaloid, so for convenience, he combined these two substances and named the new substance Hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic acid is a  mucopolysaccharide under the category of carbohydrate. It is consisted of disaccharide, meaning two monoaccharides. More specifically, these two mnoaccharides are glucoronic acid and acetyl glucosamine.

what’s the function of HA? It serves to maintain the elastoviscosity of liquid connective tissues such as eye vitreous fluid. It also helps  to control tissue hydration and water molecule transportation.

When not attached to other molecules, HA will bind to water molecule and form into a jello-like liquid. (as shown in the picture).  Its strong ability to lock water results from its unique structure. The unique viscoelastic nature of HA along with its bio compatibility and non-immunogenicity has led to its use in a number of clinical applications. Further more, the average length of  HA’s disaccharide is extremely tiny (about ~1 nm each),  .HA contains numerous repeating disaccharides and therefore it can be up to 25,000
disaccharides long. it is highly hydrophilic,
therefore, it is considered as one of the best moisturizers.

Many celebrities are getting ha injections for a better smoothing-looking skin. And I am using it too… in hope of improving my horrible skin condition :’)

I got this little bottle of HA from Japan. I think so far it works OKAY for me. Still, drinking water is the best way to maintain a perfect skin condition.
